Built by Design, Not by Chance

Over the past year, I’ve asked AI to help me with countless things. Nothing prepared me for this.
I used a prompt that turned my career, leadership philosophy, values, and aspirations into a single whiteboard sketch. Looking at it, I wasn’t impressed by the technology as much as I was struck by the reflection.
It forced me to think back to a very different season.
After being laid off from Microsoft, I interviewed for a number of executive roles. More than once, someone looked at my résumé and said, “Wow… you have a lot of education.”
At first, I wasn’t sure how to take it.
Was it admiration? Was it skepticism? Had I become… too much?
For a moment, I questioned whether West Point, Penn, Oxford, and two decades of building experience had somehow become overkill.
Then I remembered something important.
I didn’t accidentally become this person. I designed myself.
Every degree, every certification, every late night studying after work, every leadership experience - I chose those investments because I wanted to become the kind of leader who could build something enduring.
This sketch reminded me of that.
It doesn’t just show where I’ve been. It reflects who
I’ve intentionally become: a builder, a lifelong learner, a veteran, a leader, and now an entrepreneur.
The lesson for me is simple:
Don’t shrink yourself to fit someone else’s definition of what’s “enough.”
Build the person your future requires.
Not many are built like me—and that’s exactly the point.
I expected a fun AI exercise. Instead, I got a reminder of why I started this journey in the first place.
